Blood

Black Black Blood

©2010 Katherine Archer

There's a hole in the earth
Like she's spewing her soul
She says you want all my riches
Well I'll no longer hold
You can drown in my black, black blood
Drown in my black, black blood

When your power and money
Come a tumbling down
Cling to your beaches
Red, sticky and brown
Drown in my black, black blood
Drown in my black,black blood

I tried to tell you
But you're not listening
And now your vein's
Torn open wide
I tried to tell you
But you're not listening
And my sorrow rolls in with the tide

When we hear names
Like Halliburton
And Chen, Chen, Cheney
It's no wonder we're hurtin'
Gonna drown in my black, black blood
Drown in my black, black blood

While the President
And his staff convene
We're going under again
Down in New Orleans
Gonna drown in my black, black blood
Drown in black, black blood

We're trying to tell you
But you're not listening
You had no plan
You even lied
We're trying to tell you
But you're not listening
And our sorrow rolls in with the tide

If the mouth of the Mississippi dies
You can kiss our cradle of life goodbye
If the mouth of the Mississippi dies
You can kiss our way of life goodbye

We're trying to tell you
But you're not listening
And our sorrow rolls in with the tide

With our delta spoiled
And our livelihoods killed
Birds smothered in oil
Still you drill, drill, drill
Drill for your black, black blood
Drill for your black, black blood
Drill for your black, black blood

We are faced with a disaster of epic proportions in the Gulf which is already changing life as we know it. Rather than sit around feeling totally helpless I channeled that angst into this song, BLACK BLACK BLOOD. Please, pass this on to everyone you can. I'd like to see this be a tiny spoke in the wheel of major action towards reclaiming our Gulf and preventing similar incidents.

Thanks to all who helped pull this song together!

Featuring Chelsea Saddler on lead vocals with me, Lizzie Hastings on harmonies, Rob Peck on blues harp, Lu Rubino on bass, Nico Lembo on drums, moi on mandolin and harmony vocals.

Recorded and co-produced by Lu Rubino at The Fish Tank Studios. Pre-production courtesy of Jim Stafford of Eclipse Studios.

Thanks to Scott Waters for pics and web stuff, my Saltwater Cowgirls partner Lizzie Hastings for continued support and helping tweak the song, Dean Quigley for his enthusiasm and beautiful art, and Swan Rubins for helping me wake up Chelsea and cooking all those fabulous meals!
